Singaraja- In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the Undiksha Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) continues to carry out the Community Service Program (PkM). This time the activities included in the Assisted Village PKM scheme targeted Bebetin Village, Buleleng Regency from 17 to 19 June 2021. This activity was titled Fostering English Literacy and Skills to support tourism potential.
This activity was rolled out by a team consisting of English Language Education study program lecturers, namely Dr. I.G.A Lokita Purnamika Utami, S.Pd., M.Pd., I Nyoman Pasek Hadi Saputra, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Nyoman Karina Wedhanti, S.Pd., M.Pd. In the coaching activity, four students from the English Education Study Program were also involved, namely Novitasari, Nita Rahayu, Ni Luh Putu Viranicka Septyani, and Agus Januarta. His involvement is very important to provide an opportunity to apply his knowledge and skills in the field of English.
The team leader, I.G.A Lokita Purnamika Utami explained that the implementation of this activity was inseparable from the results of the previous assessment. The Head of Bebetin Village, I Gede Susanta stated that it was very important to develop English language skills, one of which was to support the development of his village, especially the tourism sector. “From that, this activity was carried out,” he explained.
This activity targets tour guides as well as youth groups/STT. In this case, youth groups or STT can form an English club which can be an initiation for the formation of a forum for residents to learn together. By the service team, coaching is carried out directly through direct instruction techniques and contextual teaching-learning practices.
The activity which took place at the Village Office was opened by the Bebetin Village Secretary, I Made Supartawan. In his remarks, he appreciated this activity and hoped to improve the quality of human resources which would have an impact on optimal village development. “Our village has tourism potential. By having the ability to speak English by the community, especially the younger generation, this potential can be further developed,” he said.
During the three days of PkM implementation, the participants were given material on Basic English for Tourism, giving exercises (practices), and giving games/quizzes. Furthermore, material on literacy is in the form of short stories and poems, giving exercises (practices) related to the material, and giving games/quizzes. Assistance activities will be carried out online in the form of strengthening participants’ literacy skills. (rls/hms)
