Singaraja– Students of the Postgraduate Program in Language Education at the University of Education of Ganesha (Undiksha) held a social sensitivity program, Saturday (10/4/2021). The event which invited students from a number of high schools/vocational schools and universities in Buleleng Regency as participants was in the form of practical journalism training. This training is one of the media to realize quality reporting and avoid hoax (hoax).
The head of the committee, Putu Sosiawan, explained the existence of journalism in the midst of increasingly high technological developments. News as a work of journalism is very easy to disseminate through various types of media, such as newspapers, magazines, and television, or social media such as blogs, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This media is also very easy to access by the public or readers, especially those that are digital-based.
He further conveyed, journalism has entered the world of education. Every school or college has formed a student press and student press. This organization plays a role in publicizing various matters related to education, both the achievements, excellent programs, and implementation of activities to the acceptance of students and students. “Student participation in journalistic activities provides very important benefits for educational institutions. Apart from that, through this program, we can also develop critical thinking skills, logic, and organizational skills as well as conducting interviews,” he said.
The news produced by the student and student press is expected to be able to present accurate, reliable, quality, and interesting information. In practice, students still face obstacles in writing activities, which are classified into general and special barriers. Common obstacles, namely obstacles experienced by all novice writers. These obstacles are in determining the topic to be written, composing effective sentences, determining the title, and choosing words. Specific obstacles stem from a person’s self, such as a loss of mood to write or problems in the field during reporting. “Departing from these problems, we took the initiative to carry out this training activity,” he explained.
This training was attended by 140 participants, consisting of students and university students, most of whom were involved in school and campus journalistic activities. The implementation is carried out online because it is still in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. “We hope that through this activity, there will be benefits in terms of practical journalism and can be applied in schools or campuses,” said the 2014 graduate of Udayana University.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the Language Education Study Program for the Undiksha Postgraduate Program, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Rasna, M.Pd., said the implementation of the social sensitivity program is one of the programs rolled out by the study program every year, as well as a form of implementing Higher Education’s Tri Dharma in the field of Community Service (PKM). The involvement of students is none other than to apply knowledge in order to contribute to providing solutions to problems that exist in society. “This training is one of the applications of social sensitivity,” he said accompanied by the Secretary of Study Program, Dr. I Putu Mas Dewantara, M.Pd.
This academic from Klungkung also hopes that with the training there will be an increase in the insights of members of the school and college press. “Of course, this program is aimed at increasing knowledge. We hope participants get it. Get benefits from this activity, “he added.
In this training, the material was filled by two speakers, namely Putu Sosiawan, who is also a student of the Undiksha Language Education Masters Study Program. He also has experience as a journalist at one of the largest print media in Bali. The material presented relates to basic journalistic techniques. What was conveyed starting from the procedures for writing news and coverage strategies? Besides that, he also emphasizes a number of things that must be held by a journalist, such as the balance of reporting, honesty, and accuracy. These three things at once anticipate the emergence of news hoaxes. “On this occasion, it would be more accurate to say it was a sharing session. I also still need to learn a lot. Everything that was conveyed today all departed from experience, “he said.
One more resource person is Putu Nova Anita Putra. He is someone who is still active as an editor for online media as well as a news contributor on one of the national television stations. He has been pursuing a career in journalism since 2003. The material presented is related to television journalism, starting from news preparation, video shooting techniques, and reporting techniques, as well as challenges faced in the field. (hms)
