In this fast-paced digital era, the Students Creativity Program in Social Humanities Research (PKM-RSH) from Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha) is exploring the changing meaning of the Tipat Bantal War tradition in Kapal Village, Bali, as perceived by the younger generation. Conducted from May to August 2024, this research sheds light on how this deeply rooted tradition has transformed in the 21st century.
This research titled “Shifting the Traditional Meaning of the Tipat Bantal War in the 21st Century from the Perspective of the Young Generation” was led by Dr. Putu Aditya Antara, S.Pd., M.Pd., and involved a team of 5 talented students: Made Shania Pradnyani (Team Leader), I Gede Wahyu Sukadana, Luh Rina Wijayant, Ni Komang Ari Rahayu, and Putu Intan Rossyta Maharani.
The Tipat Bantal War tradition, held during Sasih Kapat (around September or October) in the Balinese calendar, was conducted within the Adat Kapal Village Temple, specifically in front of Bale Agung Adat Kapal Village Temple, as an expression of gratitude for a bountiful harvest. However, due to a change in timing and location, this tradition is now often on the main road, Adat Kapal, bringing a new atmosphere to the community.
But, beneath the excitement of this tradition, there has been a significant shift in its meaning. The younger generation is increasingly more focused on the importance of social media, using the tradition as a background for their Instagram stories rather than understanding and appreciating its traditional essence. This phenomenon indicates a growing element of narcissism, which obscures the origin of the Tipat Bantal War Tradition.
In this research, the PKM-RSH Undiksha team utilized a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. Through observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies, the team aimed to uncover the perceptions of the young generation towards this tradition and how the shifting meanings are affecting the tradition. This research is expected to provide broader insights into the Tipat Bantal War tradition to ensure the younger generation and to identify the ways to preserve its original meaning.
With high spirits and strong dedication, the PKM Undiksha team is committed to uncovering and preserving the meaning of the Tipat Bantal War tradition, ensuring that this cultural heritage remains vibrant and appreciated by future generations.
