Singaraja- In the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Law and Citizenship Student Association (HMJ) of the Ganesha University of Education held an Academic Seminar, Saturday (3/10/2020). The implementation of the activity through via Zoom accompanied by a live broadcast via Youtube HMJ Law and Citizenship was attended by 250 participants, both students and the general public. This Academic Seminar raised the theme “Polemic on the PKS Bill: The Urgency of Legal Coverage and Sex Education among Millennials”. Through this theme, it is hoped that millennials will be able to understand the importance of legal protection as a form of upholding human rights and sex education, to be more self-aware in the future.
This activity begins with the showing of narrative video clips about cases related to the academic seminar theme. The head of the Department of Law and Citizenship, Dr. Dewa Sudika Mangku, S.H., LL.M. “Even in the midst of a pandemic, we must continue to criticize the recent polemics,” he said.
This seminar presented two speakers, namely Dr. Elly Kristiani Purwendan, S.H., M.Hum., as Chair of the Center for Human Rights Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Wijayakusuma (Unwiku, Purwokerto) and Sella Marsellena Mercury as the 2019 Generation Planning Ambassador (Genre) who is also a student at the Undiksha Law Study Program.
Material presentation by Elly Kristiani Purwendan discussed the urgency of a legal umbrella against sexual violence which was designed in the Draft Law on the Elimination of Sexual Violence (RUU PKS). This discussion takes into account the cases of sexual violence that have occurred and continue to increase. In this case, it is conveyed that sexual violence results from an imbalance in power and gender relations. Therefore, social deconstruction is needed, including the legal umbrella contained in the PKS Bill which has been discussed for a long time since 2015 to become the government’s concern in protecting human rights, especially in cases of sexual violence.
Furthermore, the presentation of material by Marsellena Mercury discussed the urgency of sex education among millennials. He conveyed that sex education is still considered taboo by many people. Even though this education has a huge impact on life, especially for millennials in the association. “The millennial generation must know the benefits, dangers, and how to respond or act with risks due to sexual acts,” she said.
She gave the statement “It is better to prevent than to treat” which is the right thing for millennials in an association. Because youth is the nation’s building relay, it is better to turn to contributing to the country than to waste time having fun with things that will harm the future. (rls)
