There seemed to be something different at the Buleleng Police Station on Monday (17/06/19). Located in the Buleleng Police Hall, English Language, and International Ethics Training using Contextual Learning Methods was taking place for the Buleleng Tourism Police. The Research and Community Service (PPM) activities carried out by the Undiksha Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) were opened directly by Dr. Made Sugiartha M.Si as LPPM secretary. In his speech, Sugiartha emphasized that this training activity was carried out based on one of the Tri Dharmas of Higher Education, namely community service. The LPPM secretary also added that Undiksha had collaborated in several districts to carry out community service.
Met during his busy schedule, Nyoman Supardi MP, S.H. M. M as Head of the Sumda Buleleng Police stated that language is considered very necessary, especially in providing services to the community, especially foreign languages for foreign tourists. The Head of the Sumda Division, who has an upright physique, added that if the police master the language, they will be able to provide excellent service to the community. “We have to master and understand not only foreign languages, regional languages, even body language,” he added.
The activity, which started at 08.00 WITA, had 3 core events, namely the Concept of International Ethics presented by Nyoman Karina Wedhanti S.Pd., M.Pd. Followed by stage I and II English training material, each delivered by Ni Putu Era Adnyanayanti S.Pd., M.Pd. and I Gusti Ayu Putu Novita Sari Paragae S.Pd., M.Pd. This activity, which invited 15 participants, was actually attended by more than 30 participants. This certainly shows the enthusiasm and discipline of these law enforcers regarding the responsibilities entrusted to them as police in tourism areas. It seemed that the training participants were very enthusiastic about participating in each session and practice given by each resource person. On the other hand, the Chair of the PPM Implementing Committee, namely Dr. I G A Lokita Purnamika Utami S.Pd., M.Pd. stated that the reason for choosing the Police as the target of this year’s PPM activities was based on the results of previous observations, the committee found that the Tourism Police were recruited without the previously seen potential for English language skills. The English Education study program lecturer also added that the reality on the ground is that tourism police often experience difficulties when dealing with tourists so they tend to hand over the tourists to local guides. “Starting from this problem, we took the initiative to hold this English language training,” said Lokita. Lokita hopes that in the future the tourism police will be more enthusiastic in participating in training so that the Buleleng tourism police will be able to improve their language skills as well as improve their services to local and foreign communities.
