Emotional intelligence refers to an individual’s ability to control moods, remain optimistic, and experience happiness by understanding and interacting with oneself or others, regulating emotions, and adapting to various life challenges. However, according to a questionnaire distributed to orphaned teenagers, 15% of respondents reported trauma, 13% suffered from depression, 21% experienced anxiety, and 51% exhibited emotional instability. Based on an interview conducted by the PKM Team from Undiksha, led by Ni Made Pradnyan Wulan Andini, Luh Tia Agustomo, Ni Kadek Gina Puspita Sari, I Komang Suarhadana K, and I Wayan Sindu Yamuna, alongside the Head of Destawan Orphanage Foundation, it was revealed that 13 teenagers exhibited emotional instability, characterized by excessive sadness and anxiety. Furthermore, a deep analysis indicated that the lack of emotional intelligence in these teenagers could lead to detrimental outcomes such as self-harm, destructive behavior, and even suicidal tendencies.
To address these issues, a team supervised by Dr. Putu Nanci Riastini, S.Pd, M.Pd., developed an innovative program titled Shanty Therapy: Emotional Intelligence Stimulation through Bali’s Rindik for Orphaned Teenagers at the Destawan Orphanage Foundation in Buleleng. The program integrates instrumental therapy, utilizing music to influence nerve processes in both the cortical and sub–cortical regions, thereby aiding emotional regulation (Hou, 2017). Additionally, the traditional Bali Rindik instrument, with its dynamic rhythm and “kotekan” (a traditional Balinese interlocking rhythmic pattern), produces a shooting atmosphere. The melancholic rhythm, particularly the “pepolosan” kotekan, evokes a calm mood and peaceful mood, fostering a sense of happiness and emotional stability. This approach not only promotes emotional well-being but also contributes to the preservation of Balinese Culture, as outlined in Bali Provincial Regulation No. 4 of 2020 regarding the strengthening and advancement of Bali Cultural heritage.
The main participants in this program are 15 teenagers from the Destawan Orphanage Foundation, with the program having commenced on May 16, 2024. Following the completion of the training session, the participants will hold an art performance, after which the formation of a “Shanti Community” will take place. This community will consist of the trained teenagers who will receive ongoing support and guidance. In the future, this community will serve as agents for fostering emotional intelligence among other orphaned teenagers at the orphanage, ensuring the long-term impact of the program.
