Singaraja- Undiksha’s Regional Superior Product Development Program (PPPUD) implementation team in 2019 returned to train and assist the home industry for skin care products “Bali Sari”, Sepang Village, Busungbiu District, Buleleng Regency in producing sunscreen body lotion. The product utilizes herbal ingredients in the form of goat’s milk and plant extracts.
The chief executive of PPPUD, Dr. I Dewa Ketut Sastrawidana, M.Si explained that the training had been carried out on August 25 2019, and continued to be balanced with assistance. This activity did not only target members of the Bali Sari group but also involved high school youth in the local village. “The involvement of high school students is at the same time a vehicle for education because teenagers are very close to skin care products,” he explained Tuesday (17/9/2019).
The sunscreen body lotion that was introduced has a double function, namely softening the skin while also protecting the skin from exposure to UV rays when doing activities under the hot sun. “Indonesia as a tropical climate with high sunlight intensity makes the use of lotion that functions as a sunscreen or sunblock a necessity so that skin damage due to UV exposure can be avoided,” he said.
Before carrying out the training, Sastrawidana, who has a background in environmental chemistry education, convinced the public that the use of goat’s milk and plant extracts in the manufacture of sunscreen body lotion has its own advantages. Unlike other similar products on the market. This is because goat’s milk is rich in lactic acid and minerals needed by the skin such as B vitamins, thiamin, niacin, vitamin C, selenium, and zinc, which are able to brighten, soften, and regenerate the skin and help remove dead skin cells. Meanwhile, herbal extracts are taken from gotu kola leaves, avocado leaves, purslane, mangosteen peel, temu lawak, and carrots. “This material contains photoprotective compounds as well as antioxidants and free radical scavengers,” he said.
This program is planned to last three years (2018-2020) funded by the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Ristekdikti) of the Republic of Indonesia. Furthermore, several program plans during that period included education on how to make good and correct cosmetics (CPKB), introduction to types of plants for cosmetic mixtures and their extraction methods and training, as well as assistance in making skin care products. Besides that, knowledge of business management along with product promotion and marketing is also provided. Last year, a method for making polyherbal shampoo was introduced using herbal ingredients from local plant extracts and goat’s milk. (rls/hms)
