Singaraja- Radicalism is still a threat in Indonesia. Likewise with terrorism and intolerance. These three things need to be resisted, including by the younger generation, so as to create a peaceful community life. This was conveyed by the Director of Intelligence for the Bali Police, Kombes Pol Zainal Abidin when he was a guest speaker at the Introduction to Campus Life for Undiksha New Students, Friday (13/8/2021).
In this virtual activity, it was explained that intolerance is a negative orientation or a person’s rejection of the political and social rights of a group that is not approved. Meanwhile, Radicalism is an ideology or idea or notion and understanding that wants to make changes to the social and political system by using violent/extreme methods. Then for terrorism is an act that uses violence or threats of violence that creates an atmosphere of terror or widespread fear that can cause casualties with ideological, political, or security disturbances.
The emergence of these three things, he added, was influenced by a number of factors, including thought factors, economic, political, and educational factors. In particular, it mentions the characteristics of the radicalism movement, namely claiming a single truth by misleading other groups who disagree, positioning itself as the most responsible, and using violent methods such as bombings, and kidnappings, which can attract mass attention and create a sense of terror in society. Besides that, it is also easy to disbelieve other people, that is, it is easy to be prejudiced against other people who do not agree with their thoughts and actions and so on. This can disrupt security and divisions in society.
The spread of radicalism, said Zainal Abidin, is not only through books. In the midst of the development of information technology, dissemination can be done through websites and other social media. Students have a very important role to participate in prevention. Steps that can be taken are increasing tolerance between religious communities, participating in preventing the entry of radical ideas, increasing awareness of the environment and using social media wisely, and not being easily influenced by hoax news. “For news, filter it first before sharing it,” said Zainal Abidin.
