Singaraja – “We have only one earth in this solar system,” this statement was made by Prof. Dr. Nyoman Wijana, M.Sc. on the second day of PKKMB Undiksha in 2021, Saturday (14/8/2021). In his material entitled “Environmental and Campus Awareness” indirectly implies that humans are obliged to preserve the environment and the earth itself.
Prof. Wijana, an academic from the Biology Study Program, started to present his material related to the history of the development of human life until we are now in the industrial revolution. “It is this development of human life that has led to the current pattern of settlement farm village, nebulous farm village, arranged isolated farm, pure isolated, the scattered farmstead community, the cluster village,” he said.
He further explained that the industrial revolution has indeed had a positive impact, such as electricity, transportation, medicine, and technology that can help people’s welfare. However, he also did not deny that there were negative impacts. “Besides progress, there are also negative impacts of industrial progress. Especially technology that requires basic ingredients from nature, causing forest clearing, liquid waste that flows into waterways, air pollution to solid waste which causes soil pollution that has not been resolved,” he said.
In his material, Wijana alludes to development and environmental preservation which seem contradictory. “So here it seems contradictory where there is the development that requires natural resources, while on the one hand, we also need to preserve the environment. Therefore, a pattern of sustainable development emerges in the social, environmental, and economic fields. According to Wijana, this development can meet current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Undiksha, which has a vision of becoming an Excellent University Based on the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy in Asia in 2045, has carried out the basic concept of a harmonious relationship between humans and God, humans and the environment. “As we know, in Undiksha’s vision there is the value of Tri Hita Karana, namely three things that cause happiness, one of which is a harmonious relationship with the environment. For its manifestation, Undiksha itself has carried out various activities to care for the environment and implement environmental ethics,” he said.
Wijana explained further, that environmental ethics is the moral principle of humans towards their environment. “Environmental ethics is a moral principle towards the environment, how to treat the environment as human beings. Environmental ethics can be a critical reflection related to environmental issues and in meeting the needs of life that have an impact on the environment and also as a direction for practical human behavior to respect the environment,” he concluded.
