Singaraja– The regional government continues to intensify the handling of household waste, especially in Buleleng Regency. This step is an effort to minimize environmental pollution. The Postgraduate Education Study Program at the University of Education of Ganesha (Undiksha) also provides support which is manifested through the Community Service Program. The program rolled out is in the form of mentoring and training on eco enzyme-based organic waste processing for Elementary School (SD) teachers in Buleleng District. This activity took place at the Wantilan Parhyangan Undiksha Campus, Wednesday (8/12/2021).
The activity was opened by the Undiksha Postgraduate Education Study Program Coordinator, Prof. Dr. Putu Kerti Nitiasih, M.A. She conveyed that universities are not only struggling in the fields of education and teaching as well as research. More than that, they must also be able to contribute to solving problems in society which are manifested in the form of service. These three things are framed in the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. This training activity is one of the concrete manifestations rolled out by the Doctoral Program in Education Sciences which departs from concerns about the not yet optimal management of resource-based waste. “Of course, we at universities play a role in providing solutions so that waste management, especially in households, is getting better,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Committee, I Gede Suwiwa, S.Pd., M.Pd., explained that the efforts made by the Buleleng Regency Environment Agency in handling waste are still not optimal, one of which is due to a lack of support from the community. “Therefore it is very necessary to provide knowledge to every family how to process the waste produced into products that are useful for their own families. One of the technologies for managing and processing organic waste based on sources is eco enzyme,” he said.
Delivered further, the teacher is one person who can really be expected to help deal with this waste problem. Teachers can give awareness to their students how important it is to protect the environment and the earth. “Especially elementary school teachers who provide the basis for all sciences. Character education will be very good if given early. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the technology of managing and processing environmentally friendly organic waste, such as eco enzyme,” he said.
This man from Bangli Regency said that eco enzymes produced from the fermentation of organic waste can be used as a disinfectant, as a cleaning fluid, and as a plant fertilizer. “So the benefits are not only for the environment but also for household needs. Therefore, we hope that the training participants can apply it at home and can provide education to students and other communities,” he added.
This training received a positive response from the participants. One of them is Nyoman Suarsini, a teacher at SDN 3 Banjar Jawa. “This is very useful for us, for friends later he can share knowledge about this eco enzyme,” he said. Eco-enzyme production is not a new thing for him. He has been practicing for more than a year and has felt the benefits. “The benefits that can be obtained from eco enzymes, starting from the science, then with the results this can be used for plants, external medicine, for cleaning household appliances as well. Waste management can be reduced to TPA because it is source-based,” he said. In this training, the committee presented two speakers, namely Ketut Witama from the Buleleng Environment Agency and Ferry Tanaya from the Buleleng Eco Enzyme Community. (hms)
