Singaraja– The age of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Education of Ganesha (FK-Undiksha) is still very young. However, this is not an obstacle to realizing quality students. This was proven by the success of students winning silver medals at the Advance Innovative Global Competition which took place at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 15 to 17 November 2019.
This achievement was achieved by five students who joined one team. Namely I Gusti Agung Mirah Puspitayani, I Nyoman Windiana, I Made Bharata Deandra Odantara, Ketut Alit Wira Adi Kusuma and R.R Fitria Dwi Intan Milleniari. This team created the jinabiu gel product as a medicine for a skin disease called impetigo. The product is made by processing banana skin waste from fried banana traders. To get the best results, it takes about five months of struggle. This team started by compiling research ideas and doing a lot of research. From that, it was decided to make a product and try to submit it to this prestigious competition. Going around looking for laboratories that provide tools for research was also passed until the product made from natural ingredients was successfully created. “From these products, an abstract was compiled and everything needed to be sent was then selected on the official Advanced Innovation Global Competition Singapore website. Approximately a week of waiting, finally the team received an LoA or Letter of Acceptance from our research and was invited as a finalist for AIGC Singapore to fight as one of the delegates,” said the supervisor, Dr.dr.Made Budiawan., M.Kes., AIFO.
The lecturer who also serves as Deputy Dean III of the Faculty of Medicine explained that the idea to make this product came from the high prevalence of impetigo sufferers. However, the treatment uses chemical antibiotics which have a negative impact in the form of side effects, such as irritation and hypersensitivity reactions. “Therefore, it is necessary to produce naturally sourced antibiotics. Banana peel turns out to contain substances that are able to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause impetigo. Then do research, “he explained.
To get this glorious achievement, the team had to compete with teams from prestigious universities. This success is also inseparable from the role of other coaches, dr. Ni Nyoman Mestri Agustini, M.Kes., M.Biomed.,SpN and dr. Made Bayu Permasutha., S.Ked. Budiawan explained, this achievement is something to be proud of as well as being a motivation for students to continue working, produce innovative products, and can give birth to achievements in other events. “Getting to this level is certainly an extraordinary thing. But we continue to hope that in the future more achievements will be born,” he said.
After this competition, he added, the team will continue to make improvements to these products, especially pharmacological tests, clinical trials, and toxicity tests. “This product will be continued to the next stage so that it can really be used for health,” concluded Budiawan.
Chancellor of Undiksha, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Jampel, M.Pd expressed his appreciation for this achievement. He emphasized that the age of the faculty is not an obstacle to showing quality in various competitions, especially those on an international scale. “This is amazing. FK is still young, but it can produce achievements and create innovations,” he said. He hopes this achievement can be a motivation for students and faculties to achieve similar things. “Achievement is very important to increase the grade of the institution. Of course, we hope that more achievements will be achieved by students,” he said. (hms)
