Singaraja- Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha) Undergraduate and Masters of English Education study programs held an international seminar “Promoting Child and Youth Mental Health and Well Being in Schools”, on 15 and 16 November 2019. The activity presented seven speakers from abroad this was one of the strategies to increase the knowledge of lecturers and students related to the development of current issues in the field of education.
The event coordinator, Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Padma Dewi, M.A explain that the Seminar which was officially opened by the vice director of the Undiksha post-graduate program, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Kanca, M.S., was filled by the presentation of Emotion Coaching for Children: Tips and Tricks for Parents and Teacher by Kimberley Scriven (Psychologist), Helping Youth and Teachers with Difficult Emotions: Six Mindful Steps by Karen Story (Social Worker, Educator, Family Therapist, and Counsellor)”, dan Confidence in the Classroom: Character Strengths in Children oleh Maggie Marsh. Besides that, there are also, Communication Skills and Self-awareness for Teachers as a Tool for Working with Children dan The Value of Physical Fitness for Mental Health and Well-being presented by Jane Gorman (Physiotherapist, Consultant, IAP Founder), The Impact of Social Media and Device Use on Youth Mental Health oleh Eliza Barnes (Media and Communications Consultant) and Social Emotional Learning in The Classroom: 5 key areas by Sharon Haarsma (Occupational Therapist, Program Manager, IAP Founder). All keynote speakers are practitioners/experts and also professionals from various science fields in“Integrate Asia Pacific”. “They came from Hongkong and Australia. They have a mission t help and empower the society in various fields in Asia,” she said
Integrate Asia Pacific, with founders Jane Gorman and Sharon Haarsma, has supported Undiksha’s Masters in English Language Education three times by giving seminars and workshops on various topics. “We really appreciate this support. We communicate, they are willing to fill it for free,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Committee for the Bachelor of English Education Study Program, Astiti Pratiwi, S.Pd, M.Pd., explained that the topics presented by the speakers were seen as very relevant to issues that had recently emerged in society in line with the development of student needs and demands. Like the emergence of a sense of stress in students. Such conditions are quite common. “Certainly through this seminar, lecturers and students have new insights on issues of mental health, well-being, and mindfulness that have been happening a lot lately. This activity is also one of the efforts to support internationalization at home which has been launched by Undiksha,” she said.
Apart from students and lecturers, the material at this seminar is also expected to increase the knowledge of teachers and prospective teachers about strategies for dealing with students’ emotions, mental and mental health. “With a better teacher’s understanding, of course, the quality of students will be even better,” she added.
