Singaraja- The pattern of children’s education in Indonesia is one of the things that is of concern to the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Dr. Yohana Susana Yembise. He considered that currently there is still more emphasis on basic material in learning. In an era of increasingly fierce competition, a change is desired. Learning should foster critical and analytical thinking. This was conveyed after giving a public lecture at the Global Conference on Teaching Assessment and Learning in Education (GC-TALE) and Women In Tesol (WIT) at Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha), on Monday (5/8/2019).
This minister from Papua emphasized that with regard to education, is actually the main function of the Ministry of Education and Culture. However, those who handle child protection must also pay attention. He conveyed, that education in general in Indonesia has been going well. However, there are still a number of things that need to be improved. “Many of our children have also excelled in competitions, including in the Olympics. But when it comes to cultivating critical and analytical thinking, Indonesian children are still lacking,” she said.
Responding to this, according to him, the government and schools as institutions that play a role in improving the quality of human resources must be more innovative in the learning process. As an example, in giving assignments, students are not only asked to collect material. However, it should also be encouraged to be able to observe and analyze so as to improve thinking skills. “Our children are given assignments every day, homework is only downloaded, and it’s impossible for them to have critical analytics skills. They don’t develop, they just copy other people’s thoughts. It remains only to take it, without causing critical thinking. Teachers have to take an approach,” she said.
Meanwhile, Undiksha Chancellor, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Jampel, M.Pd., revealed that the learning patterns that apply in Indonesia are still more in the context of understanding, knowing, and applying. Meanwhile, analyzing and synthesizing material as well as evaluating it is not very visible. “In general, the way of teaching is good. But there must still be efforts to improve quality, “he explained. According to the direction of the central government, the Chancellor from Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Undiksha also boosted critical thinking in learning. In fact, this is accommodated in the curriculum. “Of course, we play a role in improving the quality of human resources. What is the demand, we accommodate in the curriculum,” he added. (hms)
