Singaraja- The selection for new student admissions for the 2022/2023 academic year, especially at the Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha) has ended. In line with that, new students will be faced with a series of activities in an introduction to campus life. Furthermore, they will also take part in learning which is of course different from the junior and senior high school levels. Then, what should new students do and prepare to face this different academic atmosphere?
Head of UPT Guidance and Counseling Services Undiksha, Dewi Arum Widhiyanti Metra Putri, S.Psi., M.A., Thursday (4/8/2022) said learning activities carried out in tertiary institutions refer to the development of individuals who enter adolescence and move on to adulthood beginning. In this condition, of course, learning in tertiary institutions will try to stimulate the development of the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects of new students. This is a challenge in itself for new students to make adjustments, both physically and mentally in facing lectures that demand to develop a more critical, more rational way of thinking, then also sharpen logic. In addition, they are also able to develop independence, become responsible, and have better interpersonal skills than before. “So if students are not able to adjust to these aspects, of course, it will become an obstacle in the future when carrying out lectures,” she said.
In general, these new students will be far from their parents or from adults who previously helped with the learning process or in their daily lives. Therefore, he invites new students to prepare themselves mentally as well as possible. In an introduction to campus life, so as not to feel stressed, students from various regions need to develop better social interactions and gather information about lectures at tertiary institutions. This is considered to be an important point to be able to undergo lectures well. “I think one important point for them to be able to enjoy this activity is to make as many friends as possible. So it can share how it feels If for example, it is a bit heavy, they can share it with their friends,” she said.
Specifically related to lectures, the importance of developing a proactive attitude, full of initiative is emphasized because learning in tertiary institutions is relatively different from what is experienced at the junior and senior high school levels. Lecturers will later give more assignments that demand independence. No less important, new students do not forget to develop their interests and talents through on-campus organizations. “Lectures do not only develop the academic field but also open opportunities for non-academic ones,” concluded the lecturer of the Guidance and Counseling Study Program, Faculty of Education.
