The Brief History of Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha

According to the government’s policy at the time, since the academic year of 1987/1988 the Study Program of Educational Psychology and Guidance (PPB) and the Study Program of Informal Education (PLS) did not recruit new students. This policy lasted for quite a long time, it was up to the FKIP of Udayana University changed to the Higher Education of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP) Singaraja. The Study Program of Educational Psychology and Guidance (PPB) again recruited new students in 1997 under the Study Program of Counseling Guidance (BK), while the Study Program of Informal Education (PLS) changed to the Study Program of Educational Technology (TP) and began accepting new students in 2000.

Starting from the academic year of 1988/1989, FKIP Udayana University was entrusted to manage the Study Program of Sports and Health Education, which later changed its name to the Study Program of Physical Education, Health and Recreation (Penjaskesrek) which was included in the auspices of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education, as well as the Study Program of Fine Arts Education under the auspices of the Department of Language and Arts Education. Furthermore, starting in the academic year of 1990/1991, FKIP Udayana University also received the trust to manage the Study Program of Home Industry (PKK) and the Diploma II for Study Program of Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD D-II), under the the Department of Educational Science.

Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 8 of 1993, dated January 16, 1993, officially declared the status change of FKIP Udayana University became Higher Education of Teacher Training and Education (STKIP). At that time, STKIP Singaraja consisted of four majors, such as:

  1. Faculty of Education, was in charge of:
    1. Study Program of Guidance and Counseling (BK),
    2. Study Program of Educational Technology (TP),
    3. Study Program of Physical Education, Health and Recreation,
    4. Study Program of Home Industry Education (PKK),
    5. Study Program of Elementary School Teacher Education (D-II);
  2. The Faculty of Language and Arts Education was in charge of:
    1. Study Program of Indonesian and Regional Language and Literature Education
    2. Study Program of English Education,

    1. Study Program of Mathematics Education.
    2. Study Program of Physics Education.
    3. Study Program of Biology Education.
    4. Study Program of Chemistry Education.

The government’s policy to extend the mandate to the Education Institution for Educational Experts (LPTK) motivated STKIP Singaraja to prepare managing non-educational study programs. Starting in 1997, Diploma III program for non-educational was initiated for three study programs, such as: Informatics Management, Accounting, and English for Tourism. Through a long process, according to the Decree of Director General of Higher Education Number 3471/DIKTI/Kep/1999, dated July 15, 1999, Diploma-III Study Program for Informatics Management and Accounting were stipulated. Furthermore, with the Decree of the Director General  of Higher Education Number 216I/DIKTI/ KEP/2000 dated July 5, 2000, the Diploma III Program of English was established. Study Program of Diploma-III Informatics Management was under Department of Mathematics and Natural Science Education, Diploma-III Accounting was under Department of Social Studies Education, and Diploma-III English was under Department of Language and Arts.

As the next development, based on Decree of Director General of Higher Education Number 16/DIKTI/Kep/2000, dated February 7, 2000, STKIP Singaraja had authority to manage Postgraduate Program for Master Program of Language Education. Furthermore, based on Decree of Director General of Higher Education Number 12/Dikti/Kep/2001, dated January 18, 2001, it was permitted the establishment of Master Program of Education Research and Evaluation.

Through a feasibility study on the proposal to change STKIP become an university, finally based on President Decree Number 19 of 2001, dated February 5, 2001, STKIP Singaraja was approved to change became the State Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP) Singaraja. Furthermore, preparing the development of State IKlP Singaraja, with the Letter of the Director General of Higher Education Number: 2808/D/T/2001, dated August 30, 2001, the Department of Sports Science (S1), Hospitality Cuisine Department (D-III), Department of Hospitality Management (D-III), and Department of Tourism Sports (D-III) was approved to be established. Then, with a letter from the Director General of Higher Education Number: 138/D/T/2002, dated January 25, 2002, it was also approved the establishment for the Department of Electrical Engineering (D-III) and the Department of Chemical Analysts (D-III). Moreover, at the postgraduate level, State IKIP Singaraja was given the authority to manage Master Program of Educational Management which was determined based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 1190/D/T/2003, dated June 10, 2003.

The four existing departments, such as: Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Department of Social Studies Education, the Department of Language and Arts Education, and the Department of Educational Sciences were proposed to be faculties. Moreover, the study programs under the departments had changed its status to be departments. Especially for the engineering and vocational study programs, such as: Study Program of Informatics Management and Study Program of Electrical Engineering which were originally under the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education, and also Study Program of Home Industry (PKK)  which was originally under the Department of Educational Sciences and also Department of Hospitality Cuisine, were integrated into the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK). Furthermore, to develop the Faculty of Sports Science Education (FPIK), the Study Program of Physical Education, Health and Recreation, Study Program of Sports Science, and the Study Program of Tourism Sports Training were integrated to the Department of Sport Science (JIK). JIK was a department that was directly under the rector or at the same level as faculty.
