Singaraja- Obesity is a health problem that is now being experienced by many people, including children who experience Down syndrome. Obesity is not a condition that can be taken for granted, because it is considered to trigger the emergence of other diseases.
Various attempts have been made to overcome this health problem. As was done by the Community Service Student Creativity Program Team (PKM-PM) at Ganesha University of Education (Undiksha). This team campaigns for the implementation of sports activities with the principles of BBTT (Good, Right, Measured, and Organized). This program is socialized to overcome obesity in children with Down syndrome at the Sjaki-Tari-Us Foundation.
The Team Leader, Ni Wayan Pujasari explained that three children in the foundation located in Tukadmungga Village, Singaraja are obese. “We are trying to overcome the problem of obesity and sedentary behavior in children with Down syndrome through sports activities with good, correct, measurable, and regular principles,” she explained, Tuesday (6/9/2022).
Further explained, the socialization of this program continues to be intensified which takes place from July to September 2022 for students who experience Down syndrome, foundation teachers, and parents. The program also continues with sports activities. “The activities we do start from basic exercise movements, fine motor exercises, flexibility exercises, balance exercises, gymnastics, and other games,” she said.
The progress of this activity has been seen from the increase in activity for children with Down syndrome, improvements in locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative basic movements, and weight loss in children although not too significant due to dietary patterns that cannot be fully monitored.
