Goal 13 – Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by implementing policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change, and promote climate resilience. Every person, in every country in every continent will be impacted in some shape or form by climate change. There is a climate cataclysm looming, and we are underprepared for what this could mean. Climate change is caused by human activities and threatens life on earth as we know it. With rising greenhouse gas emissions, climate change is occurring at rates much faster than anticipated. Its impacts can be devastating and include extreme and changing weather patterns and rising sea levels.

Low-Carbon Energy Use

At Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha), we are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and promoting sustainability across campus. One key area of focus is the use of low carbon energy. To measure and track our progress in this regard, the university has been actively participating in the Green Metric Assessment. This global ranking system evaluates universities on their commitment to environmental sustainability, including energy consumption and the use of renewable energy sources.

As part of our efforts to monitor and reduce our carbon footprint, Undiksha tracks the amount of low carbon energy used throughout the campus. This includes the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar power, and efforts to minimize energy waste in university buildings and facilities. The data collected through this monitoring process allows Undiksha to continuously assess its energy use, identify areas for improvement, and take concrete steps to increase the use of renewable and low carbon energy.

By participating in the Green Metric Assessment, Undiksha is not only contributing to global sustainability goals but also ensuring that our energy usage aligns with best practices in environmental stewardship. Through these measures, the university aims to provide a sustainable campus environment that reduces its carbon emissions and sets an example for other institutions to follow.

Environmental Education Measures

At Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha), we are committed to educating and raising awareness about climate change risks, mitigation strategies, and related topics through our Community Service Program. These critical subjects are integrated as mandatory components of the program, ensuring that all participants gain essential knowledge about the impact of climate change and how to address it.

Our educational initiatives focus on empowering local communities with practical tools and strategies for mitigating climate risks, particularly in disaster-prone areas. A key aspect of this program is our collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), which helps deliver expert-led education and training on disaster preparedness and climate change adaptation.

One example of this collaboration is our earthquake mitigation simulation and outreach activities for elementary school students and village communities in Desa Serai. This initiative focuses on enhancing the community's resilience to natural disasters, promoting awareness, and providing valuable information on how to reduce risks in the event of earthquakes and other environmental hazards. The program also emphasizes the importance of local preparedness and how each individual can play a role in mitigating the effects of climate-related disasters.

Undiksha's commitment to climate action is embodied in its Campus Disaster Preparedness Program, a proactive initiative aimed at reducing the risks associated with disasters, including those caused by climate change. This program is designed to tackle disaster risks from multiple angles—both through physical development and by raising awareness to enhance the community's ability to respond effectively to various disaster threats.

The program focuses on making the campus more resilient to climate-induced hazards, such as floods, earthquakes, and extreme weather events, by integrating disaster risk reduction measures into the campus infrastructure. This includes the construction of safe, disaster-resistant buildings, the establishment of evacuation routes, and the installation of early warning systems.

In addition to physical development, the program places a strong emphasis on community education. By providing students, staff, and faculty with training and resources on disaster preparedness, Undiksha ensures that the campus community is well-equipped to respond to emergency situations. The university regularly organizes awareness campaigns, workshops, and simulations that educate participants on how to act in the event of a disaster, including the importance of climate adaptation strategies.

Through the Campus Disaster Preparedness Program, Undiksha not only contributes to reducing disaster risks but also plays a key role in promoting sustainable, resilient communities, aligning with global climate action goals and fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience within the academic environment.

Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) is deeply committed to addressing the challenges posed by climate change, particularly in relation to disasters that may lead to the displacement of people both within the country and across borders. Our university actively participates in cooperative planning and collaborative efforts aimed at mitigating the impacts of such climate-related disasters, ensuring that both our campus community and the broader population are better prepared to face these challenges.

One of the core initiatives supporting this commitment is the 'Kampus Siaga Bencana' (Disaster Preparedness Campus) Program. This program encourages all students and campus residents to become agents of change, actively engaging in disaster preparedness and response efforts both within the campus and in the surrounding communities. By fostering a culture of preparedness, the university aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to disasters, helping reduce the potential impacts of climate change-related risks.

Through the Kampus Siaga Bencana Program, Undiksha encourages community involvement, raising awareness about the risks of climate change-induced disasters, such as floods, storms, and displacement. The program emphasizes collaborative action, involving local governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to develop comprehensive disaster preparedness plans that can protect vulnerable populations.

By empowering students and campus residents to play an active role in disaster preparedness, Undiksha not only contributes to creating a resilient campus environment but also extends its influence to the wider community, ensuring that the principles of climate action and disaster resilience are deeply embedded in our collective efforts to safeguard both people and the planet.

This partnership ensures that disaster preparedness and response are deeply integrated into the university’s community engagement initiatives. Through this collaboration, students are actively involved in educating and training local communities about disaster risks, early warning systems, and how to monitor potential threats. By providing students with hands-on experience in these critical areas, Undiksha is not only enhancing their academic development but also contributing to the region’s overall resilience against natural disasters.

The engagement of students in these activities helps raise awareness in local communities, ensuring they are better equipped to respond to and mitigate the impact of disasters. This effort aligns with Undiksha’s broader commitment to disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, and building stronger, more resilient communities in line with Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action.
